Organic Photovoltaics Incorporating Novel Transparent Electrodes

Transparent electrodes (TEs) having superior electro-opticalproperties are continuously sought, as they are essential to enableoptoelectronic devices that include displays, touchscreens, photodetectorsand technologically important photovoltaic cells (both organic and inorganic).This field is mainly dominated by indium tin oxide (ITO) which has beenthe subject of research and is refined for over 50 years, and thus, the material offers many beneficial properties that have made it the material of choice. However, the future of ITO as the main material in this area is limited for economic and technical reasons. In short, a race is on to find an alternative to ITO that is inexpensive and offers better electro-optical properties.  In the first part of the talk, I will talk about ultrathin metal film (UTMF)capped aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) as an alternative to ITO. The roleplayed by the UTMF capping layer will be discussed in increasing thefunctionality of AZO layer and its effect on the performance in organic solarcells. Later during the talk, I will introduce the concept of microcavityeffect in solar cells and show that this effect can be utilized to modulatethe light confinement and enhance the optical field intensity within thephotoactive layer leading to higher photon conversion efficiencies even with aTE which is semitransparent in nature.
