Kamal joined the lab in January 2010 and worked on Identification of ribosomal residues involved in UUG codon recognition in eIF5G31R mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. He completed his masters with the best thesis award in May 2012. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. from NII under Dr. Amitabha Mukhopadhyay.

It is my great pleasure to be the part of the Translational Control lab, the very first lab in which I started my research career. During my stay in lab, from January 2010 to June 2012, I was associated with the project titled “Identification of ribosomal residues involved in UUG codon recognition in eIF5 G31R mutant of Saccharomyces cerevisiae”. Being an undergraduate student, I was given the opportunity to work in a major project of the lab, which helped me a lot to develop diverse research and technical skills, and evolve as a competent researcher. The remarkable thing about lab is that I was not spoon fed or work as a technician just because I was an undergraduate, but I was given an opportunity to drive the whole project under the direct supervision of Dr. Pankaj Alone. During this process of training, I developed rationality of designing an experiment, executing the experiment, and analysing the outcome. Day to day interaction with Dr. Alone and discussion with the lab members was an enormous support to identify the flaws and mistakes in my work, correct it and move forward. Lab meeting always helped to keep the track of ongoing research in this field. Summarizing all the above said, it was consistent guidance of Dr. Alone, support from the lab colleagues, and my hard work which lead me to the best thesis award for the M.Sc project.
Lab party was always fun, spending time together and fighting with lab members to convince them try out new cuisines in different restaurant of Bhubaneswar. The attachment which I developed with this lab will remain forever in my heart and I proudly say this is MY LAB.

Integrated Masters Student(January 2010 - June 2012)

Pooja joined the lab in January 2010 and associated with the project titled “to decipher the molecular mechanism of non-canonical start codon recognition based on consensus sequence utilization by mutant initiation, eIF5 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. She joined BARC Training centre and now serving as a Scientific officer-C at BARC, Mumbai.

I started my research career in Dr. Pankaj Alone’s lab in 2010 as my M.Sc Research project. I was associated with the lab project titled- “to decipher the molecular mechanism of non-canonical start codon recognition based on consensus sequence utilization by mutant initiation, eIF5 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.” In this lab, I learnt everything, which a budding researcher required from holding pipette to developing scientific problem solution attitude. Under the guidance of Dr. Pankaj, I learnt how to tackle problems in lab and come out with a solution. Along with this, here I learnt how to design experiments and if experiment fails how to do troubleshooting. Now after coming out from lab, I am realizing that how well I was trained in his lab. It was my pleasure to work in his lab and I’ll always remember whatever being taught by him. Along with science, we use to have lot more fun specially in pizza parties and b’day treats. I really miss those days.
